“Fearfully and Wonderfully Made” – Dr. Paul Brand and Philip Yancey

SKIN
What do you know about our SKIN? (Structure, function, features ect.)
  1. When we see a person, what we see is his/her SKIN – Visibility

By looking at skin we see: color, age, heath, emotion, experiences, Identity…. However,

Compared with other finely decorated animals, the human seems naked, vulnerable and incomplete. More than that of any other species, our skin is designed not so much for appearance as for relating, for being touched. And this aspect of skin summons up the basic function of skin within the body of Christ. In that body, skin becomes the presence of Christ himself, the membrane lining that defines our community and enshrouds God’s Body in the world. We have seen that Christians sometimes err by displaying their skeletons before a watching world. Christ condemned that trend. Instead, he held before us that the principle of love, saying, ‘All men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another’(John 13:35)

The Analogy of skin – soft, warm, and touchable – conveys the message of a God who is eager to relate in love to his creation. Christ was saying to us: Let the world first see the beauty and feel the softness and warmth of the Christian community, and then let it realize the underlying internal frame work.

As the world encounters Christ’s Body, what is its texture, its appearance and “feel” – its skin? Do people see “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control” (Galatians 5:22-23)? … Others are drawing a picture of Christ from our appearance….

  2. What may it be if you don’t feel pain when cut by a knife – Perceiving

Our skin tells about our environment: wind, particles, parasites, pressure, temperature, humidity, light, radiation…, as well as love by touching.

If there is a change in the air pressure, or in the texture of cloth, or in the temperature, skin sensors fire of messages to the brain. In the same way the Christian church being, as Jesus said, “in the world not of the world,” encounters a constant stream of signals about qualities and needs of its environment. The Body is large, universal, and its sensors report in simultaneously from lakeshore apartments in Chicago, the slums of Harlem, the jungles of Peru and Sri Lanka, and the deserts of Russia and Arabia.

We shall observe qualities of skin that allow for quick adaption to change. But these qualities are useless is the receptors of skin are numbed. God chose to establish a tangible presence in the world where he, like men and women, felt – through skin, fatigue, pain, and ultimately death. No better model of tactile exists than Jesus, God’s Son. And now we are called to be his sensitive “skin” in the world.

  3. “I am used to the hot water!” – Compliancy

Every square inch of our skin has different response to touch: sole(250mg),tip of tongue(2mg); and this fit the function of each part. Our nerve system adapts to touches.

Fat globule surrounded by collagen makes our skin incomparable material of compliancy.

Compliancy, a word with special meaning to my engineering colleagues, is a good word biologically and a pregnant word spiritually. I need the inflexibility of my skeleton to keep upright and to impose my will on the environment, but when I grasp something it is good that my bonds do not contact the object. The compliant tissue covering my bones assume the shape – awkward and smooth – of the object. I do not demand the object fit the shape of my hand; my hand adapts, distributing the pressure.

….the apostle Paul finished the analogy for us in 1 Corinthians 9:19-22 “Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might have some.

  4. How is touching important? –Transmitting Love

A new born baby could never mature without touching.

The skin of the Body of Christ, too, is an organ of communication: our vehicle for expressing love. … I have sometimes wondered why Jesus sp frequently touched the people he healed, many of whom must have been unattractive, obviously diseased, unsanitary, smelly. With His power, he easily could have waved a magic wand…..Jesus’s mission was not chiefly a crusade against disease, but rather a ministry to individual people, some of whom happened to have disease. He wanted those people, one by one, to feel his love and warmth and his full identification with them.

The ideal, then, is to give love to someone you can touch – a neighbor, a relative, a needy person in your community. …

  5. Skin is the frontline of our bodies – Confronting

The world is rough. Skin protects us from attacks: water, dust, chemicals, bacteria, and insects ect.

Of all organs, skin seems to me the most sacrificial; it is no wonder one-fourth of a general practitioner’s patients come because of skin ailments. Skin absorbs incredible abuse to maintain the equipoise of vital organ inside, which cannot tolerate a changing environment. A temperature increase of just seven or eight degrees would kill the whole body; thus the skin is called on to act as a radiator, rushing fluids to the surface to evaporate and cool the body. Increased blood supply to the skin’s surface dissipates the heat. On a summer day, as much as two gallon of perspiration may be shed to cool the active body.

In one sense, because the whole community of followers represents Christ’s Body to the world, all Christians participate in the appearance function of skin. At times each of us also encounters the friction of being advance guard of Christ’s Body to the world. Yet I believe that just as our bodies must protect the delicate cells in the eye or the liver from harsh realities of the external environment, so the church includes individuals who need to be sequestered and allowed times of quiet contemplation. Others need protection during particularly vulnerable periods of their lives. On behalf of all these, some members of the body of Christ take up the front line, the exposed positions, and endure the trauma for the rest of us.
